Expo forum taps development of coastal economic zone

Experts and officials today gathered in Xiamen, Fujian Province, to discuss the building of an economic zone on the western side of the Taiwan Straits at an Expo-themed forum.

The economic zone centers on Fujian and faces Taiwan Island across the strait, including a string of coastal cities such as Shantou and Meizhou in Guangdong Province as well as Fuzhou and Ganzhou in Jiangxi Province.

Yan Junqi, vice-chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress, and Zhou Hanmin, deputy director of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai Executive Committee, are among those who delivered speeches and presented suggestions at the forum.

Zhou also elaborated on the World Expo 2010's volunteer recruitment and the interactive development between Shanghai Expo and the economic zone.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao noted that such an economic zone could make use of the currently peaceful ties across the Taiwan Strait to forge stronger economic cooperation for mutual benefits and development, and help tackle the challenges posed by the global financial crisis during his visit to Fujian in May.

It would also contribute to the ignition of a new growth engine in China by capitalizing on Fujian's comparative advantages, and to the long-term development plan of the country, he said.
